This is our first official week in existence and the Beat Maven podcasters didn’t disappoint. There is something for everyone available for streaming and/or downloading. Jugoe‘s amazing set of dance floor savvy set electronic funk, disco, jazz and soul was recorded live at the Beat Maven launch party here in Chicago and has been posted on the illmeasures Podcast. Mark Farina drops a sick house set of proper house music for the Space Academy podcast. M50‘s genre defying set, also for the Space Academy, was one of my favorites of the week. Bryan Ford comes with a nice mix of hip hop and downtempo head nodding beats for Unlocked. DJ Chang was busy – adding three new mixes this week taking for a true journey. And finally, husband and wife, Sista Stroke and Mr. Hun, trade guest spots rocking their unique styles of house music on each others’ shows – awwwww that’s love! BeatMaven.com is an electronic music podcasting network that gives you new DJ mixes and live recordings from around the world making them available for streaming, downloading and of course podcasting. Our official launch party is this Friday (April 2nd) in Chicago at Darkroom(2210 W. Chicago Ave). The party features a number of DJs who are currently podcasting on the network along with a couple guests who will be soon. The Lake Street Collective, the group hosting the event, is a collaboration between two of Chicago’s premier underground party promoters (Revolutionary Music and illmeasures). Their semi monthly bashes at Darkroom are music centric and always jumpin’. This event features: Jugoe, a top notch DJ/producer from Cleveland, Ohio who is signed to the downtempo label Bastard Jazz. In the studio he primarily produces lounge music but when he DJs he plays all genres throwing together incredible sets of “drunken funkiness.” He has played along side djs like Diplo, Questlove and Mr. Scruff. VOLT MODZwill be debuting their live PA this Friday night. Their style is a psychedelic blend of funky tech house, jackin’ house and glitchy minimal thick with analog synths. They’ve released one remix for Revolutionary Music so far with more on the way. The VOLT MODZ is made up of Kevin Ford (Acid O.G.’s, Elev8tor, Chicago Afrobeat Project, K Ford) and DJ Shifty Johnson. DJ Strizof illmeasures is a key player in the midwest Burning Man scene, one of the most in-demand DJs in Chicago’s underground community and regularly opens for acts such as Jesse Rose, DJ Krush, Glitch Mob and Bonobo. He is extremely versatile, and is regarded as a DJs’ DJ. He can rock downtempo breaks, mid tempo grooves, house, tech house, fidget and techno with equal mastery. The bottom line is he plays whatever the moment calls for and absolutely destroys the dancefloor everytime he spins. Ryan Scott and Filip D.aka twoDeep are probably the most underrated DJs in Chicago. Each is equipped with world class skills and exquisite taste in music. They’ve filled danceefloors at some of Chicago’s hottest clubs and underground parties. They play everything from downtempo to deep house to tech house and minimal. They’ve been tapped to set the mood for the night. Hope to see you there! On Friday, April 2nd, the Lake Street Collective returns to Chicago’s Darkroom to celebrate the official launch of BeatMaven.com, a new electronic music podcast network that offers up hours upon hours of streaming and downloadable electronic DJ mixes. The party will be broadcast live on BeatMaven.com and will feature the turntable stylings of Jugoe (Bastard Jazz Recordings/Cleveland), a live performance from the tech funk duo VOLT MODZ (Revolutionary Music) and DJ performances from DJ Striz (illmeasures) and Ryan Scott & Filip D. aka twoDeep. As always, Revolutionary Music and illmeasures, the crews behind the Lake Street Collective, promise to bring the underground loft party vibe to the Darkroom dance floor. Their last party at Darkroom was massive! About Jugoe. About VOLT MODZ CLICK HERE TO BECOME A FAN OF LAKE STREET COLLECTIVE ON FACEBOOK Lake Street Collective Podcasts on Beat Maven: The Beat Maven Podcast Network is gearing up for a launch date that will be announced soon… Meanwhile, our podcasters are bringing their A-game before we even officially launch with amazing mixes and monster guest DJs. DJ S of the Space Academy podcast just posted an amazing set from one of my favorite house music DJs on the planet: Fred Everything of Lazy Days. Fred Everything actually played the last of the Safe House closing parties in 2007. He rocks it every time he hits the decks. I was told today that Space Academy has Jimpster up next. Wow. Check out the Space Academy! Another recent guest, Chris Allison of Kinjo Music fame, recently made an appearance on Mr. Hun’s Jackumentory Experience. It was a incredible mix of house music that made want to start jackin in my office. Sista Stroke’s Brick City House podcast never fails to bring top notch house mixes from household names like Paul Johnson and lesser known one’s that you should know like Cilly C and John Simmons. Check it out! DJ Chang Bang, of Simon’s Nightclub fame, has also been killing it with his podcast show. He posted two well received tributes to the glory days Simon’s Innermind in Gainesville, Florida. I was there, and yes, it was truly and epic era! In addition to mixing Florida club scene classics, Chang has been dropping some sick eclectic mixes that include funk, disco, house, breaks and electro. Don’t sleep, be sure to check out the DJ Chang Bang Podcast. Also, one of my favorite live DJ sets of 2009 was posted by the illmeasures crew: DJ Striz live at Resonate April 2009. DJ Striz absolutely annihilated it. A massive sound system, a warehouse full of freaks and fire dancers all jackin’ to his ultra sick blend of tech house and fidget. We lost our minds on the dance floor. Download this mix whatever you do! Ryan Scott launched his Beat Maven podcast as well. Ryan is one of Chicago’s best kept secrets. His tech house and minimal mixes are exquisite. We traveled to Ibiza (Eivissa) together this past summer. The mix he brought with him, aptly named Eivissa, is a great way to get introduced to his talent. It is available for download right now. Finally, I hope you you have a chance to check out my latest mix on the Safe House Podcast. I put it together as an opening set, programming it as if I were warming up a club night. It begins with deep house and space disco and ramps up to jackin house music. I call it The Party Starter! Much more is on the way. We hope you enjoy the music! Much love, Jeremiah Seraphine Check out the new site wide player! It pulls the latest podcasts from the entire site. It can also be accessed from the front page at Beatmaven.com. Over the years as a DJ, promoter, producer, journalist, record label owner and of course avid electronic music fan, I’ve become friends with quite a few of really talented DJs. Some of them are international superstars, others are local legends and still others are incredibly talented but don’t have the proper platform to be heard outside of their local spots. I’ve also noticed, that as we push on in this industry, we are often in competition with one another – either with our own events or for the best gigs. It is rare that we’re afforded the chance to truly pool resources and collaborate. BeatMaven.com is such an opportunity. For our Beta launch, scheduled for January 2010, I’ve assembled an incredible cast of talent to produce the very first BeatMaven podcast and blog sites: illmeasures: Over the years I’ve become closer and closer with the amazing DJs and artists in this underground collective based here in Chicago. DJs Striz, Justin Reed and Brad Miner have become apart of my extended family. We produce the Lake Street Collective parties together. We’ve been tight since my early days of DJing as apart of 3 Degrees Global. As DJs, they are some of the best in Chicago. As promoters, they are behind the best underground parties in the city today including Freakeasy and Resonate. DJ Chang Bang: DJ Chang is one of my earliest DJ influences. I met him back when he was a resident DJ at the legendary Simon’s nightclub in Gainesville, FL. The early 90′s were a magical time at Simon’s and in the electronic music scene in general. Since then he’s played parties all over the world. I brought him into 3 Degrees just before I left the crew to start Revolutionary Music. He has been podcasting for nearly as long as I have. I turned him on to the platform while he was living in Bahrain. I was actually envisioning putting something together like Beat Maven. The problem was that at that time I didn’t have the tech chops to get it done. Now, almost seven years later, we’re finally making it happen. Brick City House by Sista Stroke: Sista Stroke and I have been tight since we met on the dance floor more than five years ago. She was one of the residents in our Safe House parties here in Chicago. We toured together in the U.S. and in Europe. Our plan was to move to London to spread the word of JACK. However, just after getting rid of most of my furniture, I met the love of my life and chose to stay here in Chicago. Oktober (Sista Stroke) then met the love of her life (after a stint in LA) and is now married to him and living in London. Funny how things work out. Over the past year she’s been developing her internet radio show ,Brick City House, on ChicagoHouseFM.com. The Brick City House Podcast is the recording of that show. It is pretty sick. Space Academy by DJ S: This podcast is the next generation of his popular Sexual Toast Podcast. I met DJ S (Dan), years ago when I was doing the 3 Degrees thing. He was a regular head and a pretty sick DJ involved in Chicago’s vibrant house music scene. About five years ago he took a job teaching English in Seoul, Korea. Now he’s teaching more than English through a brand new monthly radio show on one of Seoul’s hottest radio stations and with his Space Academy parties which have brought the likes of Miles Maeda to South Korea. Phuel: Phuel Entertainment is a new booking agency in Chicago that represents artists like Barbara Tucker, Johnny Fiasco, Shifty Johnson, VOLT MODZ, Lego, Sean Smith, Issie Nixon (Ibiza), Jacoby (Spain), Marcello Totti (Czech Republic), Alexander Fog (Italy) and more. Their podcast features mixes and promos from their roster of sick sick DJs and performers. Ryan Scott: Ryan is a great friend who has been instrumental in making Beat Maven happen. He is our graphic designer. I worked closely with him to build the site. He is also a sick DJ and producer. He has been podcasting and producing and internet radio show for years. I really dig his DJ style and I think you will too. The Jackumentory Experience: I’ve never met Mr. Hun in person, but I’ve listened to his Jackumentory Experience show on ChicagoHouseFM.com and I must say this Londoner represents house music as if he were born and bred here in the Windy City. He is also married to Sista Stroke so that makes him family. Make sure you check him out. Lee Jarvis: I met Lee when I played his Moochin’ party at in London a couple years ago. Since then he’s moved here to Chicago and our better halves have become inseparable. He is now apart of the Revolutionary Music crew and a good friend. He is a writer and social media marketer by day, so I’ve convinced him to move his music blog over to the Beat Maven network so he can help us all keep up to date on what is happening in electronic music today. He also plans to start podcasting when his equipment finally gets here from London. Revolutionary Music: Of course my label and crew is going to have a presence on Beat Maven! Our amazing roster of artists includes Bryan Ford & Goulet, Kevin Ford, Elev8tor, VOLT MODZ, Shifty Johnson, Sista Stroke, Adrienne Sanchez, FORM, Justin Reed, Backseat Bingo, Andrew Emil, myself (Jeremiah Seraphine), Burton L., and more. Expect promos, mixes, live performances, vintage Safe House podcasts and surprises. So, as you can see we have some great stuff in store for you! Soon we’ll be adding more podcasters. We want to take it slow so we can work on making the site better. I you have any suggestions don’t hesitate to hit me up at jeremiah@beatmaven.com.
